There's a reason wood fences are still the most common fence in Dayton backyards. They look right on just about any house, they give you real privacy, and when they're built right, they hold up for a long time. At Broadway Fence LLC, wood fencing is bread-and-butter work. We've been installing wood and cedar fences across Dayton, Kettering, Huber Heights, and the surrounding suburbs since 2021, and we build every one like it's going in our own yard.

Why Wood Still Wins for Dayton Backyards

Wood does three things no other fence material does at the same price: it blocks the view completely, it looks natural against landscaping, and it can be repaired one board at a time instead of replacing whole sections. A six-foot wood privacy fence turns a backyard in Trotwood or Englewood into a genuinely private space — room for the kids, the dog, the grill, without feeling watched from the neighbor's deck.

It's also the most flexible material we work with. Stained dark walnut, left natural, or painted white picket out front — wood takes all of it. And if a storm knocks out a section five years from now, we replace boards, not the whole fence.

Cedar vs. Pressure-Treated Pine: An Honest Breakdown

This is the question we get most, so here's the straight answer.

Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects. It looks great unfinished and ages to a silver-gray if you leave it alone, or takes stain beautifully if you don't. It costs more upfront — usually 20 to 30 percent more than pressure-treated — but it lasts longer with less fuss.

Pressure-treated pine is the workhorse. It's pine that's been treated to resist rot and insects, and it's the most affordable way to get a full privacy fence. It does need stain or sealant to look its best long-term, and it'll check and crack a little as it dries out. That's normal seasoning, not a defect.

There's no wrong answer. If budget matters most, pressure-treated gets you a great fence. If you want the best-looking, longest-lasting wood fence, go cedar. We'll quote both so you decide with real numbers.

Fence Styles We Build

Board-on-board. The classic Dayton privacy fence. Boards overlap so there are no gaps — even as the wood moves through Ohio's freeze-thaw cycles, you keep your privacy. What most of our customers choose.

Shadowbox. Boards alternate on each side of the rails. Privacy with airflow, and it looks finished from both sides — your neighbor sees a nice fence too.

Picket. The traditional look. Three or four feet tall, spaced pickets, great for front yards in places like Kettering and Beavercreek where you want curb appeal without walling yourself in.

Horizontal slat. A modern look with boards running sideways. Popular around Miamisburg and Huber Heights the last few years. Costs a bit more in labor, but the result stands out.

The Honest Talk About Wood Fence Maintenance

Any contractor who tells you a wood fence is "maintenance-free" is selling you something. Here's the truth: a wood fence needs a little attention, but not much.

Plan on staining or sealing it every 3 to 5 years. That's the whole maintenance program. A weekend with a sprayer, or hire it out — either way, it's the single biggest thing you can do to extend your fence's life. Keep grass and mulch from piling against the bottom boards, and trim back bushes that trap moisture against the wood.

Do that, and a cedar fence in the Dayton area will give you 15 to 20 good years. Pressure-treated, more like 10 to 15. Skip maintenance entirely and you'll be replacing it in half that time. We tell you this before we build — we'd rather have you as a customer for life than sell you a fence under false pretenses.

How Our Wood Fence Installations Work

Free estimate. We walk the yard with you, talk styles and materials, measure everything. Written quote, no pressure, no "sign today" games.

Layout and permits. We mark the line, confirm boundaries, and check permit requirements for your city — rules differ town to town, so we verify every time.

Post setting. Where fences are won or lost. We dig below the frost line — 36 inches minimum — set posts in concrete, and crown it so water runs off. Most leaning fences you see failed at this step.

Build-out and cleanup. Rails, pickets, gates, caps — fastened properly, gates hung to swing true. Then we clean up. Not "mostly" clean. Clean.

Most residential wood fences take one to three days.

We're based in Dayton and work across the Miami Valley — Kettering, Huber Heights, Englewood, Miamisburg, Xenia, Trotwood, Clayton, and Beavercreek. Full backyard privacy fence in Huber Heights or a white picket fence in Kettering — same process every time: honest quote, solid posts, clean work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a wood fence last in Ohio?

With basic maintenance — stain or sealant every 3 to 5 years — expect 15 to 20 years from cedar and 10 to 15 from pressure-treated pine. Ohio's freeze-thaw cycles are hardest on the posts, which is why we set ours below the frost line in concrete.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Dayton?

It depends on your municipality — most area cities require one above a certain height, with rules on front yards and corner lots. We check the requirements for your address before we build. It's part of the job, not an extra.

How much does a wood fence cost?

It depends on footage, height, material, gates, and terrain. A 150-foot cedar privacy fence versus the same fence in pressure-treated can differ by a few thousand dollars. Our free on-site estimates give you real numbers for your yard, not phone guesses.

Should I stain my new fence right away?

For pressure-treated pine, wait 2 to 3 months so the lumber dries — stain won't absorb into wet wood. Cedar can be stained sooner. We'll tell you exactly when based on what we installed and the season.
